Abstract:

The sharp increase in Venezuelan nationals interacting with the U.S. legal system has presented a unique challenge for judicial interpreters: mastering venezolanismos. Venezuelan Spanish is heavily influenced by regional jargon, indigenous roots, and historical shifts, resulting in a rich tapestry of colloquialisms that can completely alter the meaning of a testimony. In a legal setting, where accuracy is paramount, misinterpreting a slang term can compromise the integrity of the record.

This 1-hour interactive webinar is designed specifically for U.S. court interpreters looking to bridge the linguistic gap between standard Spanish and everyday Venezuelan speech. Participants will explore high-frequency idiomatic expressions, slang (chamo, arrecho, pichirre), and culturally specific descriptions of events or objects frequently encountered in criminal, civil, and immigration proceedings. We will analyze how these terms shift meaning depending on context, tone, and region, and discuss concrete strategies for maintaining accuracy and neutrality when standard equivalents fall short.
