Equal Footing for LEP Persons

Meet your training requirements for certification!

Cost: $500 - scholarships and payment options available

Prerequisites: 

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Provide proof of High School diploma (or equivalent) or a higher degree
  • Provide proof of competency in English AND one other language

The Equal Footing for LEP Persons medical and community interpreter training seminar has been expanded to a 60-hour course. Class will be held the first and third Saturdays of each month, November 2016 - February 2017. For more information on how to register, please contact Sarah Tapia at translations@swits.us.

Instructor, Saul Arteaga provides participants with valuable information about the interpreting profession and supervises interpreting practice in a learning environment. 


Throughout the interactive course, participants will learn about various topics, including:

  • Modes of Interpreting
  • NCIHC and IMIA Codes of Ethics 
  • Role of the Interpreter
  • Best Practices
  • Interpreting in Different Settings
  • Managing the Interpreting Session
  • On-site, Telephone, and Video Interpreting
  • Interpreter Safety and Protocol

Participants will practice and implement interpreting techniques in small groups, listen to and critique recordings of interpreting scripts, and record and critique their own renditions. Students who complete all course requirements will receive a certificate of completion.
